What is the best type of shoe to wear while hiking in the Grand Canyon and other parks nearby?

My girlfriend and I are going to the Grand Canyon but we’ll also be going to Zion and Bryce. The hiking will only be a few miles at a time, none of this half day or all day stuff.
Will a good pair of gym shoes like Nike or New Balance be OK or do you suggest boots?
